Olden But Golden go top!
Another win for Olden But Golden and the Park Arabs get revenge!
We kicked off the second half of our season with the biggest victory of the season so far, Scouting for Goals punishing Sports Centre United 12-0. SFG started fast and SCU’s heads went down far too quickly as they could not contain star of the night Geraint Dyment, who seemed like he couldn’t miss the target all evening, as he hit 8 goals, most of them spectacular. Scouting For Goals seemed to be losing touch with the leading pack but did themselves a huge favour with this win, bringing their goal difference up considerably, which could prove vital at the end of the season. Sports Centre United will have to dust themselves down and pick their heads up before next weeks game.
Game 2 threw up a good tense game as Park Arabs got revenge for their opening day hammering off Crowninthians FC, pulling off a great 3-1 victory against a Crowninthians team missing some key players and lacking ideas. For much of the match Crowninthians pressed the Park defence but could not break them down, and some great counter attacking goals put the Arabs in the lead and made it even harder for the Crowninthians to get near the Arabs’ goal. Lee Jones did a great job of holding the ball up while the Park looked to run the clock down and Crowninthians lost top spot in the league as they fell to just their second defeat. Next week’s double pointer against Olden But Golden could go a long way to deciding who wins the league and should be a cracking game.
Game 3 saw The Vaders squander the chance to go top of the league as they were beaten 5-3 by Borussia Maestegladbach. After a tight first half, in which The Vaders missed several chances, including a penalty, Gareth Hanbury came out of goal to make the difference in the second. He was a constant threat for BMG and quickly notched up 2 goals and a Man of the Match performance, giving his team a deserved and welcome win. It meant that there is now just 7 points separating BMG in 6th and Olden But Golden in 1st. The league is left wide open. Robbie Walters got another couple of goals to stay atop the scoring charts but it’s little consolation after going from a possible 1st to 4th in the league.
Our final match saw Olden But Golden take the huge 6 pointer against The Rebel Alliance, winning 4-2 in what was a bit of a drab game. The Rebels, once again struggling to field a side, couldn’t build on their first point last week and missed a huge opportunity to get off the bottom of the league and in the mix. There was little fight put up and while the scoreline looks close, Olden But Golden were rarely troubled as they kept the ball easily and could’ve stepped it up at any point. They remain the only unbeaten team and can stretch their lead considerably as they play their second 6 pointer next week, although they will have to work a fair bit harder to beat Crowninthians FC. All that’s left for The Rebels now is to restore some pride, some of their players deserve a lot better and will hope for their team mates to show more commitment in the coming weeks.
On a final note, there have been quite a few unregistered players creeping in over the last few weeks, and while I understand it is difficult to raise a full team some weeks, I ask that if you are short that you borrow players from other teams as at least they are registered as part of the league. Nobody wants to call any games off, but it is not fair on other teams if some teams are fielding new players constantly. There is a reason why you registered 15 players and that is to make it fair all around, and if those teams bringing unregistered players continue to do so then the whole 15 player squad is pointless as you would have fielded more than 20. From now on, registered players only please.
