Olden But Golden still unbeaten

On another wet night, Olden But Golden draw again but remain unbeaten.

Week 6 kicked off with a very hard fought battle between The Vaders and Sports Centre United. The Vaders were looking to keep in contention at the top and Sports Centre United were hoping to build on last weeks first victory, and they almost did as they took a 1-0 lead into half time and kept a tight defence at the beginning of the second. The Vaders finally found an equaliser and it was an error which led to The Vaders getting ahead, a SCU defender drifting into his own area to concede a penalty, which Jordan Harris dispatched easily. Dean Williams put The Vaders safe and they just held on to finish the game 3-1 victors. Christian Powys picked up a Man of the Match award for keeping The Vaders in front with some safe hands in goal.

Game 2 saw league leaders Scouting for Goals take on the only remaining unbeaten team, Olden But Golden, in what looked like a very good match up. And it turned out that way too, both teams working non stop to try and get the 3 points. In the end they had to settle for a point a piece in a hard fought 2-2 draw. Highlight goals from John Morgan (SFG) and especially an outstanding volley from Damian Howells (OBG), which is a serious contender for goal of the tournament so far. Scouting for Goals remain top and Olden But Golden stay 5th but with a couple of games in hand they should start to move up the league if they continue their form.

The 7.30pm kick off saw title challengers Crowninthians FC comfortably beat current whipping boys, The Rebel Alliance, 8-2. Racing into an early 4-0 lead, Crowninthians started to turn on the style with constant movement and great passing, but a goal pulled back by Ieuan Evans for The Rebels give them some brief belief going into the second half. The second half told much the same story, though, Crowninthians ripping through The Rebels defence with quick one-twos and scoring a lot of close range efforts which left goalkeeper Aaron Loveluck-Frank no chance, although he did manage to pull off several very good saves to keep the score down somewhat. A missed penalty (great save Ken the Cat) for The Rebels seemed to dash any glimpse of a comeback although they fought till the end and made Crowninthians work hard for the win. Crowninthians are just a point behind top spot now with a game in hand, and as we move to the half way point next week, it’s certainly getting interesting at the top. Special mention to Scott Gray, Dan Smith and Rob Boydell for making up the numbers.

Our final game ended with our second draw of the night, Borussia Maestegladbach scoring a bizarre equaliser to finish the game 3-3. A very competitive game, it looked like Park Arabs might have the win in the bag once they took the lead, but BMG fought back and even held on with a man down with 5 to go. Lewis Kingdon moved to top of the goal scoring charts with his goal and once again he linked up well with Jamie Preece. Chris Boydell’s penalty miss looked like it could be costly but a Johnny McNamara strike set the Arabs on their way only for Evan Pryce to even things up with a cracking strike. Luke Davies pulled off some great saves in the BMG goal and fully deserved his Man of the Match award for earning BMG a point. Park Arabs’ patchy form sees them lie in 4th, just off the pace of the top 3, but with a game against The Rebels next week they will fancy their chances to close the gap as The Vaders and Scouting for GoalsĀ above them face each other. BMG will tussle with Olden But Golden to try and move above them.

Newt week sees us reach the mid way point and the league is shaping up nicely. In week 8 and 9, both Olden But Golden’s games against The Rebels and Crowninthians will count for double as they make up their games in hand. See you next week!
