Park Arabs lay down a marker!
On a wet week 5, Park Arabs finally decide to turn up!
With so much potential in the team, it’s been a surprise to see Park Arabs struggle in most of their games so far but last night they finally turned it on, beating league leaders Scouting for Goals a massive 10-3. They started the game quickly and were soon several goals in front. Lewis Kingdon and Jamie Preece causing mayhem in the SFG defence with fast passing and movement.
Scouting for Goals threatened to mount a comeback at one stage where the Arabs seemed to take their foot off the gas and SFG showed their determination. But a couple of quick fire goals soon put the Arabs back in control. Lee Jones punishing them late on and putting the game beyond doubt. SFG remain top but are looking over their shoulders now as Crowninthians are just 3 points behind with a game in hand.
And it was in game 2 that Crowninthians FC collected their latest win, sweeping aside Borussia Maestegladbach 7-3 with their superior attacking. The Crowninthians are also looking solid at the back, having conceded just 7 goals in 4 games so far. Chris Lewis doing a great job in goal. BMG had a few first timers and it was one of these, Paul Jones, who provided most of the threat for them picking up a Man of the Match vote for his efforts, although goalkeeper Lee Williams pushed him close with some great saves. BMG stay within 3 points of 2nd place so they are still in a decent position but clash next week with the Park Arabs who should be riding a wave of confidence. Crowninthians FC face wooden spoon chasers The Rebel Alliance next week and will be very confident going into that one.
The Rebel Alliance made it 4 losses from 4 as they faced fellow strugglers Sports Centre United in game 3, both teams looking for their first points. The game didn’t start well, Dale Coles gifting SCU a penalty in the first couple of minutes by running through his own area. Nathan Johns got The Rebels back in it with a vintage chest control, turn and volley from 20 yards out, but SCU score twice more to enter half time 3-1 up. The game was still close, but The Rebels found it difficult to get in any good chances on goal, and when they did, Cal Williams pulled off some great saves to keep his team ahead. Scott Davies bagged a few more goals after mazy runs and The Rebels reduced themselves to long distance pot shots as they resigned themselves to yet another defeat, 6-1 the final score. In desperate need of a win, The Rebels will hope for a full squad next week as they face the mighty task of playing Crownithians FC, while Sports Centre United move onto a game with The Vaders.
Game 4 was a great game between 2 evenly matched teams and it was Olden But Golden who came out on top, beating The Vaders 3-2. A tight affair throughout, Olden But Golden never really looked like losing and got some help with the sin bin of The Vaders’ Kurt Vincent. A lapse in concentration from kick off allowed OBG to take the lead right from half time and although The Vaders got an equaliser, OBG got the decisive goal and kept a tight defense once again to see out the game. They could have had more if it were not for goalkeeper Christian Powys, who pulled off some nice saves and kept The Vaders in the game. Olden But Golden are starting to look like very good contenders and face top of the league Scouting for Goals next week in what should be a top game. The Vaders need to pick themselves back up after their second defeat, although they remain 3rd in the league.
It was the first week where the weather wasn’t beautiful and while it didn’t affect the games much, we definitely missed the little kids who have been acting as ball boys for us, so hopefully the sun returns next week! Thanks again to everyone for keeping the league competitive and interesting from top to bottom.
